Quick answer
Choose the Footprint Small for a precise fit with compatible Six Moon Designs one-person shelters; choose a generic ultralight shelter footprint for versatility across different tarp and tent setups.
Why fit matters for a tent footprint
A footprint that is too large can collect water and debris under your shelter, adding weight and potential abrasion. One that is too small leaves the floor edges exposed to dirt and punctures. The right fit balances protection, weight, and simplicity.
The Footprint Small is designed specifically for several Six Moon Designs single-person shelters, so its shape and attachment points align with those models. A generic ultralight shelter footprint, often a rectangular sheet of coated nylon or polycryo, gives you freedom to trim it to any shelter but lacks pre-shaped corners or grommets.
Trade-offs beyond fit
The Footprint Small costs USD 9.10 (catalog comparison price USD 13.00) and is available in different material options. It eliminates guesswork and saves setup time. A generic footprint can cost less per square foot and be cut to multiple shelters over its life, but you must cut and seal edges yourself, and it may shift under the tent floor without corner loops.
If you own one of the listed compatible shelters—Lunar Solo, Skyscape Trekker, Skyscape Scout, Deschutes, Deschutes Plus, Deschutes Zero-G, Gatewood Cape, or Serenity NetTent—the Footprint Small is the straightforward choice. If you rotate between different tarp or tent brands, a generic footprint offers more flexibility.
Zipper care is a separate maintenance step
A footprint protects your shelter floor, but sand and dirt still reach your zippers. Zipper Care (Zip Care™ Liquid Zipper Cleaner & Lubricant by Gear Aid™) is designed to remove sand, dirt, and salt deposits that jam zippers. It complements a good footprint routine but solves a different problem—keeping your shelter closure working smoothly after many trips.
Footprint Small vs generic ultralight footprint: trade-offs
- Footprint Small: Pre-shaped for specific Six Moon Designs one-person shelters. Costs USD 9.10. Available in multiple material options. No cutting or edge sealing needed.
- Generic ultralight shelter footprint: Rectangular sheet (e.g., polycryo or coated nylon) that you cut to size. Can be reused across different shelters. Lower per-unit cost, but requires DIY trimming and may shift without corner loops.
- Zipper Care: A separate accessory for maintaining zipper function. Use it after trips to remove debris that accumulates even under a footprint. Not a footprint alternative. Add Zipper Care to your maintenance kit if you hike in sandy or dusty conditions.
